On Wednesday evening, Bayern Munich overcame Mainz 4-0 away from home to progress to the third round of the DFB-Pokal.

A sensational hat-trick from Jamal Musiala, who later opened up about his future at Der Rekordmeister, and a well-taken strike from Leroy Sané ensured that Vincent Kompany’s side enjoyed a relatively straightforward evening.

However, Robin Zentner, the Mainz goalkeeper, ended the game severely frustrated and made his feelings clear after the final whistle.

Speaking to ZDF after the game, the 30-year-old shot-stopper took aim at Harry Kane, who needlessly kicked Zentner, leaving him with a laceration on his head:

“You can certainly blame him for that. He sees relatively early on that he won’t get to the ball. Then he might as well just stay away.”

Nevertheless, the goalkeeper’s disapproval did not stop there, as he then explained his disbelief that Bayern’s second goal was not ruled out for Musiala standing in an offside position:

“You don’t need a VAR for that. We have a linesman for that. It’s relatively clear, a situation that’s easy to judge. The fact that he didn’t see it… That’s not even close. We didn’t have any luck with the referee either. That’s reserved for Bayern.”

The 30-year-old’s anger regarding both instances was understandable, but on the night, Bayern were far too good for Mainz, who would never have overcome the record champions regardless of the decisions made by the officials.
