Neither City nor Chelsea were able to break the deadlock before the halftime interval, after an opening 45 minutes of action akin to a pair of boxers probing for weaknesses in the opening rounds before going for blows.

Interim City boss Nick Cushing was certainly more pleased than his managerial opposite, and the introduction of Dutch star Vivienna Miedema just before the restart signaled his intent to capitalise on City's attacking numbers.

Chelsea so nearly were the ones to open the scoring just after the restart, however, after City's Ayaka Yamashita did well to scramble across her line to deny a Laura James thunderbolt from breaking the deadlock.

But it would be City who would finally break the deadlock in the 61st minute through none other than Miedema herself after she dispatched a thunderous volley at the near post after Laia Aleixandri's header was initially tipped onto and off the post by Hannah Hampton.

City looked good for a second goal after taking the lead as Chelsea struggled to make good on boasting nearly sixty percent of the ball, with Miedema providing just that one minute from the end of normal time when she completed her brace off the bench.

Miedema's double would ultimately be enough to gift City a strong aggregate advantage heading into the second leg next week, with the two domestic rivals primed for yet another evenly-matched clash on the continent.
