Ruben Amorim has said the calmness of Manchester United impressed him during the club’s challenging win against Ipswich at Old Trafford.
United survived a calamitous early error and first-half red card to secure a hard-fought 3-2 win over Ipswich on Wednesday night. The Red Devils fell behind inside four minutes after a mix-up between Patrick Dorgu and Andre Onana allowed Jaden Philogene to open the scoring.
Amorim’s side levelled through Sam Morsy’s own goal and took the lead when Matthijs de Ligt scrambled in a second from a set piece. However, the game turned when Dorgu was sent off just before half-time for a high challenge. Ipswich took advantage almost immediately, equalising in first-half stoppage time through Philogene with Onana again at fault.
Despite being down to 10 men, United retook the lead when Harry Maguire headed home from a corner on 47 minutes. United then weathered sustained pressure, restricting Ipswich to few clear-cut chances to claim the points.
Amorim was delighted with the spirit his showed amid a current lack of confidence and praised the fans for willing his side on to the win.
“It’s really good for a coach to see that. It’s one thing passing that moment to have a performance like this, when the performance is like this, it’s not perfect, but we suffer a goal with one mistake,” he said at his post-match press conference.
“In this context, I felt that the team were more calm than in certain games. That’s a good thing. We turned things around, scored twice and were clearly in control. Then we had the sending off and had to fight for the three points. Today was a good performance in all aspects for my team and also our fans. They were amazing.
“I enjoyed the performance and the way we managed all the things against us. I felt the team were strangely more in control in possession than in other games with 11 players. Football is like that sometimes. You get surprises. We defended in the second half and tried to make some transitions to win the game.”
