Man Utd firing Erik Ten Hag will directly impact Rangers | OneFootball

Obviously we’ve seen the news that Manchester United have parted company with Erik Ten Hag, the Dutch manager being completely the wrong appointment for the Old Trafford giants and didn’t gel at all with their club.

The knock on effect of this sacking is significant for Rangers in two major ways, and Ibrox Noise explores them in this piece.

The first big one is the parallel of both managers in Ten Tag and Rangers’ Philippe Clement and their rather poor spells at two of Britain’s biggest clubs. Ten Hag was completely out of his depth at Man Utd, and didn’t connect with what they need to win. He won a couple of miserly trophies which for their expectations was nowhere near enough. Clement is in the same boat – out of his depth, not winning enough, just one (easy) trophy and has blown everything else he had.

They even look similar to each other, a point not lost on many.

Ergo if Utd finally got a grip of themselves and sacked their man, will Rangers do the same (especially if the side fails to win v Aberdeen). It’s possible.

The second point of course is that no matter what, this abysmal Utd will not have Ten Hag as manager when Rangers face them in the Europa League – that’s actually bad news for Clement. He did not know what he was doing with the English goliath and had dropped points all over the place. Sam flipping Lammers had scored at Old Trafford for goodness’ sake, that’s how low Utd were sinking.

By getting rid of Ten Hag, Utd’s position might just get new manager bounce which is far from good for Rangers. We would already have struggled even against Ten Hag’s poor Utd, but against one that may get reinvigorated by interim coach Van Nistelrooy or a new permanent one, we will struggle worse. Just because Utd are mince at the moment by their standards doesn’t mean that a midtable side in England is a stroll for Rangers. Far from it. Rangers would struggle v most sides in the Championship these days.

So there will be implications in Utd now being managerless, and there are parallels and knock-on impacts for Rangers.

Clement’s hands are full with Aberdeen right now, but he may well have one eye on what’s going on Down South too…
