Manchester City team news vs Plymouth Argyle

Manchester City’s absentee list is relatively thin for Saturday’s clash, with only four players expected to miss the affair.

Erling Haaland returned to the starting XI in City’s game against Tottenham in the mid-week, with the Norwegian bagging the only goal in their 1-0 win. He is fully fit and will be in contetion against Argyle on Saturday.

John Stones suffered a thigh injury against Real Madrid in the Champions League a couple of weeks ago, with Pep Guardiola expecting a “lengthy lay-off” for the England international.

Meanwhile, Oscar Bobb and Manuel Akanji are set to miss multiple weeks, and Rodri is expected to be out until the end of the season as he continues to recover from an ACL injury he sustained last September.

City’s last shot at silverware

Pep Guardiola has failed to win silverware in just one of his 16 seasons as a manager – his first year at Man City in 2016-17.

But, with his side out of the Champions League and the Carabao Cup, and lying 20 points off Liverpool in the Premier League table, the Spaniard faces his first trophyless season in eight years.

Man City’s hope of notching a major honour this year rests on their FA Cup fortunes, which is why Guardiola is unlikely to take it easy against Argyle, despite the visitors languishing in the Championship relegation zone.

While the champions are unlikely to field their best XI, it would not be surprising to see some of the big guns on the team sheet come Saturday.
