An update surrounding Manchester City’s transfer business during the January market is likely to come as a significant blow to clubs eyeing some of the Etihad’s talents.
While much of the conversation surrounding the Premier League champions during the winter window is centred around arrivals into Pep Guardiola’s squad, there has been plenty of discussion in recent weeks that has linked players with exits.
A number of the club’s first-team stars are widely seen as underperforming this season, whether that be down to ageing legs or a lack of desire to compete after years of success, and as such clubs have reportedly been monitoring their respective situations.
Among the names to have been linked with high-profile January exits are Kyle Walker, with the City captain getting significant interest from Saudi Arabia, while Kevin De Bruyne is free to discuss deals with clubs as he enters into the final six months of his existing contract.
But the name that has most commonly been tipped for an exit is highly-rated attacking midfielder James McAtee, having endured limited opportunities on the field for Manchester City during the opening six months of the season.
However, according to the information of The Athletic’s David Ornstein and Pol Ballus, the current sense at City is that the Premier League champions will not be letting any member of their first-team squad leave in the January market.
That will most likely come as a blow to both Bayer Leverkusen and Borussia Dortmund in the Bundesliga, with the German giants eyeing McAtee as a primary target to strengthen their options, whether that be this winter or during the summer.
A number of Premier League clubs, particularly from London, have also been eyeing a conversation over McAtee’s future, but they will seemingly have to look elsewhere for recruits ahead of the second-half of the season.
For Manchester City, it appears as though their focus remains very much on bringing in new names, and Eintracht Frankfurt’s Omar Marmoush, Lens’ Abdukodir Khusanov, and Atalanta’s Ederson are among the names being strongly considered.
