Since joining Werder Bremen on loan from Manchester City, life in the Bundesliga has gotten off to a good start for 23-year-old wingback Issa Kaboré. The Burkina Faso international has logged shifts off the bench in all of Werder’s last four league fixtures. This past weekend, the Burkinabé was one of the substitutes head coach Ole Werner specifically singled out as having made a difference in the comeback 2-2 draw against Borussia Dortmund.
It may not be long before Kaboré gets a starting nod from Werner. This constitutes quite the achievement given how competitive the wingback position remains within the Bremen squad. Mitchell Weiser and Derrick Köhn appeared to have the slots locked down. Highly talented Belgian international Olivier Deman had to be shipped out on loan due to his inability to crack the XI.
Kaboré’s signing raised a few eyebrows in German footballing circles due to the current nature of the roster. The fact that Kaboré himself is now entering his fifth loan stint with a different club rendered it unlikely that he would stick in the Hanseatic city-state. Odd player-club marriages are nonetheless not uncommon in the Bundesliga.
Nigerian striker Taiwo Awoniyi, for example, was loaned out to seven separate clubs by Liverpool before finally finding a home with Union Berlin. Within one calendar year, Awoniyi’s ability to gain traction in Köpenick enabled his dream of finding a club in the Premiership come true when Union sold him to Nottingham Forest.
Kaboré certainly holds similar ambitions, not to mention a desire to settle down. The 45-times-capped African international had nothing but good things to say about his new loan locale in an interview with Sport Bild. Bremen are reported not to activate their purchase option, but can still negotiate. Kaboré maintains a €6m estimated market worth.
“To be honest, I can well imagine it,” Kaboré told Bild in an interview for the Wednesday print edition. “I feel very, very, very comfortable here. I have been well received and feel important here. That’s why I would love to continue my career here beyond the summer.
“The people are open and friendly, and the team is completely focused and ambitious,” the player continued. “I’m experiencing a really good working atmosphere here.
“If everyone involved agrees, I would like to stay,” Kaboré concluded.
