Manchester United are closing in on a deal to sign Matheus Cunha from Wolves.
Cunha has accepted an offer to join Manchester United, who are prepared to trigger the forward’s £62.5m release clause at Molineux.
Despite talks with other Premier League sides, Cunha has prioritised Old Trafford and is set to become Ruben Amorim’s first signing of the summer transfer window.
The 25-year-old has impressed at Wolves this season, scoring 15 times and providing six assists to help Vitor Pereira’s side avoid relegation. He turned down an exit in January in favour of signing a new deal, though the contract included a release clause that is active this summer.
Fabrizio Romano has reported that a deal is now almost done. An agreement has been reached between Cunha and Manchester United, with the transfer at the final stages. An announcement is expected imminently.
The deal will be a huge boost to Manchester United after a torrid Premier League campaign. United are 16th in the table and set for their lowest league finish since last being relegated to the second tier in 1974.
Champions League qualification could still be secured by winning the Europa League, ahead of Wednesday’s final with Tottenham Hotspur in Bilbao. Cunha is open to the transfer regardless of whether the Red Devils are successful in that decider.
The Brazil international will improve a Manchester United forward line that has struggled this season. In addition to outscoring each of Ruben Amorim’s squad in the Premier League, he ranks among the division’s top performers for shots per 90 (4th), shot-creating actions (10th), successful take-ons (9th) and fouls drawn (2nd).
