Enjoying a positive loan spell in La Liga, Roma defender Marash Kumbulla admitted his loan move to Espanyol has provided him the opportunity to rebuild his career following numerous injury setbacks in the Italian capital.
In a lengthy interview with Cronache di spogliatoio, the Albanian international detailed his summer switch to Spain and reflected on his his most memorable moments with the Giallorossi.
“Espanyol has given me continuity,” began the 25 year-old. “When we beat Real Madrid, I couldn’t believe it. Real never give up—even after the final whistle blew, I was still tense because it felt unreal.”
“I’m very pleased with my decision. I needed playing time after my injuries—I was there (at Espanyol) within a day and a half after I received their first call. The stadium and the training center are incredible, state-of-the-art facilities where you want to stay longer than needed—which helps unite the team.”
He continued, “Having Barcelona nearby also made me realize how much Espanyol fans love their team. They always say, ‘Espanyol is a feeling.’ The stadium is full, and we have so many season ticket holders who genuinely live for the club.”
Asked about his favorite memories at Roma, whom he initially joined in 2020, Kumbulla pointed to the team’s European success.
“The atmosphere during the two seasons where we won the Conference League then went to the Europa League final was unreal,” said Kumbulla.
“I remember the club’s kitman, Roberto, who always made me laugh, turned to me on the bench and said, ‘How can you not win in an atmosphere like this?’ The stadium was packed, totally sold-out and the energy was incredible.”
He continued, “The Conference League victory felt like destiny: the final happened to be in Tiarana and I never imagined winning a trophy in Albania.”
“That was one of the most incredible moments of my life. Winning the first-ever Conference League at home and then celebrating in Rome the next day with thousands of fans was simply unforgettable.”
