Marcus Rashford has been called up to the England squad for their upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Albania and Latvia.
Thomas Tuchel is preparing for his first games as England manager and has recalled Rashford after a 12-month absence from the national team.
Tuchel told England’s official YouTube channel: “There is no doubt about his talent and about his quality.
“But to see him so decisive and physically involved gave me the impression that it is the right moment to call him up and give him the extra push that he stays on that level.”
He joins Chelsea right-back Reece James, Southampton goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale and former Liverpool midfielder Jordan Henderson in making a return to the squad.
Rashford has earned 60 caps for England, scoring 17 goals. He played in every major tournament before being left out of the European Championship squad last summer.
Currently enjoying a resurgence on loan at Aston Villa, Rashford has yet to score for Unai Emery’s side but has provided three assists in nine games.
He was instrumental in Villa’s Champions League round-of-16 victory over Club Brugge. He registered an assist in their 3-0 win over the Belgian side on Wednesday.
The versatile forward has made no secret of his desire to play at the next World Cup.
He turned down offers from Saudi Pro League clubs in January to remain in Europe.
With competition for places in the England squad fierce, Rashford must seize this opportunity to impress Tuchel.
He also needs to maintain his strong performances for Villa to boost his chances of future call-ups.
