Marseille boss Roberto De Zerbi has admitted that former Manchester United forward Mason Greenwood is “not in good shape” amidst his goal drought.

Greenwood permanently left United in the summer to join Marseille in a deal worth around £27million.

His arrival at Stade Vélodrome was marred in controversy, with a section of the Marseille fanbase criticising the move. The Mayor of Marseille, Benoit Payan, also lambasted the transfer as he urged the Ligue 1 outfit not to go along with it.

Payan branded Greenwood’s behaviour in England as “unspeakable” and “unacceptable.”

However, despite this rocky start to life in the South of France, Greenwood began on a high note, scoring twice in his debut during a 5-1 victory at Brest in their league opener.

The Carrington academy graduate followed that up with another brace – in the space of a minute – as Marseille beat Toulouse.

In seven Ligue 1 appearances, Greenwood has so far managed five goals.

De Zerbi previously showered Greenwood with praise for his excellent contributions to the side. However, the Italian coach recently struck a different tone when asked why the forward had gone four games without registering a goal or assist.

The Marseille boss said, “Some of our key players are not in good shape, like Mason Greenwood.”

RMC Sport journalist Daniel Riolo shared De Zerbi’s sentiments as he stated, “Then, there are the stars, finally the one who arrived like a star because in August, when he was hot, it was total bliss.”

“But Greenwood has disappeared for three games, he doesn’t do anything anymore, we don’t know where he is. He too will have to wake up and face up to his responsibilities.”

Marseille have dropped five points across their last two top-flight fixtures and have dropped to third in the standings as a result.

They are currently five points adrift of leaders AS Monaco. De Zerbi will certainly be hoping that Greenwood sparks to life when they return to action at Montpellier on October 20.
