Mason Mount showed some rare attacking form in Manchester United’s 4-3 loss to Brentford on Sunday afternoon.

While manager Ruben Amorim decided to field a young and inexperienced side, some senior players including Mount were given an opportunity to start the match and show the impact that they can have on their struggling team.

Hampered by injuries, Mount has endured a difficult journey since arriving at Old Trafford, never quite cementing his place in the team.

Although he was one of the more subdued performers in the Brentford match, Mount knew how to make the most of the few attacking chances he had, showing that he can be clinical should Amorim decide to make more use of him going forward.

Mount’s shining moment undoubtedly came in the 14th minute, when he received a ball from Alejandro Garnacho that he buried in the back of the net to hand Man United the lead.

He made a crucial pass on the stroke of half-time to Garnacho, looking to return the favour. While Garnacho was perfectly position in the centre of the box to score, he misfired his shot.

Early in the second half, Mount and Garnacho’s partnership remained effective. Garnacho passed the ball to Mount on the edge of the box, whose well-struck shot was parried by the goalkeeper. The English attacker had the awareness to pounce on the rebound, but the keeper was able to save this effort as well.

He had two shots on target, with another shot being blocked.

Mount’s passing was decent, with 19 of 23 passes reaching their intended target. He did not attempt any crosses, while his only long ball of the afternoon was inaccurate.

He won two of his four ground duels, while emerging victorious in his sole aerial duel of the match.

Despite being in the front three, Mount also put in a notable defensive effort, making one clearance, an interception, and two tackles.

Although not every one of his statistics was something to write home about, Mount proved to be largely impactful on the attack whenever he saw the ball.

This clinical performance is surely something that Amorim will want to take note of going into the second leg of the Athletic Club clash.
