Most league assists in Europe’s top five leagues since the start of last season

European football is home to some elite creators right now and we’ve decided to profile the players with the most assists since the start of last season.

The footballers with the most league assists in Europe’s top five leagues since the start of 2023/24.

Mohamed Salah – Liverpool (14)

Mohamed Salah’s output continues to border on absurd for Liverpool with the winger having added elite creative numbers to his remarkable goalscoring feats. The Egypt international has reached 10+ assists in each of the last four Premier League campaigns and has 14 since the start of last season.

That return includes four in just six appearances in 2024/25, during a flying start under new head coach Arne Slot.

Bukayo Saka – Arsenal (14)

Salah is perhaps the benchmark that Premier League wingers have aspired to in recent seasons and Bukayo Saka has certainly evolved into a similar force. Saka has already notched up 88 goals and assists in his Premier League career despite only celebrating his 23rd birthday last month.

He has started the current campaign with a bang and equalled an Arsenal icon’s divisional record in the process. Saka assisted in each of Arsenal’s first five league games in 2024/25, the equal-best run from the start of a season alongside Thierry Henry (2004/05).

Alex Grimaldo – Bayer Leverkusen (14)

Perhaps the signing of the season in Europe’s top five leagues last term. Bayer Leverkusen picked up Alejandro Grimaldo on a free transfer from Benfica and watched on as the Spaniard starred in their Bundesliga title-winning season.

Grimaldo scored 10 goals and laid on 13 assists from left wing-back for Xabi Alonso’s champions, an astonishing return from the 29-year-old. He notched his first assist of the new Bundesliga campaign against Wolfsburg last month.

Cole Palmer – Chelsea (15)

Since the start of last season, Cole Palmer has delivered 43 goal involvements, scoring 28 goals and setting up 15, in 39 league appearances for Chelsea. It’s an average of a goal or assist every 73 minutes, while his return is more than anyone else in the league.

Last weekend, Palmer became the first player in Premier League history to score four first-half goals in a game against Brighton.

Ollie Watkins – Aston Villa (15)

Ollie Watkins has 15 assists since the start of last season with the England international having evolved into a complete forward under Unai Emery. In addition to scoring 19 league goals last season, Watkins set up his teammates on 13 occasions to win the Premier League’s Playmaker of the Season award.

Alex Baena – Villarreal (19)

Alex Baena is out in front with 19 assists for Villarreal since the start of last season. The left-winger was the joint-leader for assists in La Liga last season (14) and has five in just six starts in 2024/25 to date.

In the summer, the 23-year-old and Barcelona midfielder Fermin Lopez became the first players to win the European Championship and Olympic gold medals in the same summer.
