With Christian Eriksen confirmed to be leaving upon the expiration of his contract and Casemiro likely to be transfer-listed, a new midfielder is imperative for Manchester United this summer.

The funds are poised to be in place, too. Jadon Sancho signing for Chelsea permanently will recuperate around £25 million, while the Red Devils could also receive £40m of pure profit if Aston Villa opt to keep Marcus Rashford long-term.

Following his recent return to action, Adam Wharton has re-emerged as a potential target for INEOS at the end of the term, with both CaughtOffside and TeamTalk relaying United’s interest in the one-capped England international since the turn of the year.

Wharton, 21, has endured a quiet campaign spent mostly watching on from the sidelines due to a groin injury, which kept him out of action from November through to January.

His first appearance following his layoff came – ironically – against United in Crystal Palace’s 2-0 win at Old Trafford on February 2, and he has since featured in their 2-1 defeat to Everton, 2-0 win over Fulham and Tuesday’s 4-1 thrashing of Aston Villa.

While Wharton didn’t register an assist on the night, he was pulling the strings for the 78 minutes he played at Selhurst Park, so much so that he earned high praise from goalscorer Jean-Philippe Mateta post-match.

“When I play with this player [Wharton], I can score every game,” said the prolific frontman while speaking to TNT Sports.

Of course, such stellar performances from the young prospect will only be ramping up his price tag in Palace’s eyes – not that they’ll want to sanction his exit anytime soon, that’s for sure.
