Indeed, the Red Devils had established their interest in Davies several months ago when it was first reported he was considering parting ways with Bayern Munich, where he has spent the last seven years.

It was suggested the full-back was looking to ply his trade in new surroundings, with Bayern marking his first-ever venture into Europe after signing from MLS outfit Vancouver Whitecaps. He quickly became one of the most highly-regarded in his position in world football and accumulated a lengthy list of honours with the Bundesliga giants – including a continental treble in 2020.

Presumably, Davies’ agent took the time to gauge the options available from his suitors in recent months before the player put pen to paper on a five-year deal, as he’d been the talk of the transfer market prior to his extension.

“Official, confirmed,” Fabrizio Romano shared this afternoon. “Alphonso Davies signs new deal at Bayern until June 2030.”

United and Real Madrid were adamant about vying for the 24-year-old’s signature, although the Reds’ recent acquisition of young Patrick Dorgu to rival Luke Shaw likely spelt the end of their interest anyway.

They forked out £25 million to sign the Danish international from Lecce last week, after which he became their only permanent first-team arrival of the winter. Ayden Heaven, an 18-year-old centre-half, also made the switch from Arsenal’s academy.

Shaw, who is a permanent starter when available, is closing in on his return to action in the near future – though, as always, it remains to be seen how long he’ll actually maintain his fitness. United fans won’t be holding their breath, that’s for sure.
