Jean-Louis Gasset and Montpellier HSC have parted ways by mutual consent. He leaves the club with La Paillade on the verge of relegation to Ligue 2.

The situation at Montpellier is dire. Gasset replaced Michel Der Zakarian earlier in the season but he has failed to arrest the slide and currently, MHSC are on course for relegation to Ligue 2. Rock bottom of Ligue 1 and 11 points off Stade de Reims, who occupy the relegation play-off spot, Gasset has already said that there is “no hope” of survival.

After the abandonment of the game against AS Saint-Étienne just before the international break in mid-March – eventually awarded as a win for Les Verts – there was talk of a departure for Gasset, however, following a meeting with the hierarchy, it was decided that he would remain.

After Sunday’s defeat to Le Havre AC (2-0), Gasset said that the club “had to stop believing” and it is in the wake of this loss, what feels like the final nail in the coffin, that Montpellier have taken the decision to part ways with the veteran. The club confirmed that Montpellier and Gasset have parted ways by mutual consent. It is unclear who will complete the season in the dugout for Ligue 2-bound MHSC.
