Liverpool against Manchester United remains the biggest fixture in English football.

Despite contrasting fortunes across the last decade, the world still stops to watch when English football’s most successful clubs go head-to-head. It’s a rivalry based on geography, historical tensions between the respective cities, and competition as two of the biggest clubs in the game.

On this day in 2023, Liverpool took home more than bragging rights. On a famous afternoon at Anfield, the Reds ran riot against their fiercest rival to record a historic win.

There appeared to be little unusual about the contest at half-time, when Cody Gakpo’s fine finish had handed Liverpool a narrow lead. The second half, however, will be talked about for decades to come.

Liverpool smashed six past Manchester United without reply, dishing out a humiliating reality check to the Red Devils and new manager Erik ten Hag. A week earlier, Manchester United had been celebrating Carabao Cup success with a win over Newcastle at Wembley.

Darwin Nunez doubled the lead two minutes after half-time and Gakpo’s dinked second make it three moments later. Mohamed Salah got in on the act with a fourth, before Nunez got his second of the afternoon.

Salah’s second made it six and saw the Egyptian surpass Robbie Fowler as Liverpool’s record scorer in the Premier League era. Roberto Firmino came off the bench to complete the rout.

Liverpool’s 7-0 victory is the biggest win in the history of the fixture, eclipsing the Merseysider’s 7-1 success over their Manchester rivals in the 1895-96 Second Division.
