Paris Saint-Germain kept their unbeaten run in domestic play alive with a 3-1 victory over Olympique de Marseille in the latest edition of Le Classique.
After a quiet opening 15 minutes, Ousmane Dembele opened the scoring in the 17th minute. Khvicha Kvaratskhelia nodded the ball into the path of Fabian Ruiz, who slipped a pass through to Dembele.
Despite a slight miscontrol, the forward spun past an onrushing Gerónimo Rulli and slotted home from the edge of the box.
Because of that goal against OM, Dembele matched a feat that his former teammate Lionel Messi accomplished in 2016. Stats du Foot Dembele is the first player since Messi in 2016 to score 22 goals in the first three months of a calendar year for a European Top 5 club in official competition. The Argentine had 24 goals with Barcelona that year.
Furthermore, Stats du Foot highlighted on X that two French players have already scored over 30 goals for a top-five European club in official competitions this season, and it’s only March—Kylian Mbappe with 31 and Ousmane Dembele with 30.
This is the first time a country’s players have hit this mark by this point in a season since Argentina’s Messi and Sergio Agüero did it in 2017-18 when Messi had 36 goals and Agüero had 30.
