Former England star Paul Gascoigne has sensationally claimed Sir Alex Ferguson should return to Old Trafford as manager for one more season.

The Scotsman is the most successful manager in the club’s history and spent 27 years at the helm, where he won 13 Premier League titles, two Champions Leagues and an array of other domestic cup competitions.

The managerial icon retired though in 2013 and has since been a member of the club’s board.

United have massively struggled to replace the great man and have frequently sacked coaches after fleeting moments of success have turned to dust, as in the case of Jose Mourinho and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, and what seems to be currently taking place with Erik ten Hag.

With the Red Devils languishing in 14th spot in the league, numerous managers such as Thomas Tuchel, Thomas Frank and Ruben Amorim have all been linked to replacing the former Ajax man.

Speaking to SportsCasting (via TEAMtalk) Gascoigne stated that it has been an impossible job to replace the Scot.

“It’s like me as a player, I knew I was good. And it doesn’t matter who I was up against, or replacing, for instance, no problem.”

“To follow Alex Ferguson, a few of them, even Jose Mourinho didn’t last long, David Moyes not for long.”

“Looking at Ten Hag, I feel sorry for him a bit. I would love Alex Ferguson to take over just for one season and just see what he could do with those players because I think some of them take the p— out of Ten Hag.”

The former Tottenham Hotspur midfielder claimed that he felt certain players at the club don’t pay enough respect to the manager of such a big club and they “don’t realise” who they are playing for.

The return of Alex Ferguson to manage his former side would be the most sensational of sporting decisions and would see a tide of nostalgia wash over Manchester and the rest of the footballing world.

Nonetheless, at 82 years old, 11 years out of football management and having had his own health issues and family bereavement to deal with in recent years, the very idea of Sir Alex returning to the helm is pure fantasy from Gascoigne.
