Eddie Howe and his players facing Wolves on Wednesday night with a 7.30pm kick-off.

As a Newcastle United fan though, have a look at this midweek’s other Premier League fixtures and have a think about what you’d like to happen and what is likely in terms of results.

Four Premier League fixtures tonight, then four (incl Newcastle v Wolves) on Wednesday night, then the final two on Thursday night.

Tuesday 14 January

Brentford v Man City (7.30pm)

Chelsea v Bournemouth (7.30pm)

West Ham v Fulham (7.30pm)

Forest v Liverpool (8pm)

Wednesday 15 January

Everton v Villa (7.30pm)

Leicester v Palace (7.30pm)

Newcastle United v Wolves (7.30pm)

Arsenal v Spurs (8pm)

Thursday 16 January

Ipswich v Brighton (7.30pm)

Man U v Southampton (8pm)

This is how the table looks on Tuesday morning 14 January 2025) before this round of Premier League fixtures are played:

My Conclusions

Tuesday 14 January

Brentford v Man City – Brentford have gone from having the best Premier League home record, to then losing at the Gtech to Forest, Arsenal and then Plymouth in the FA Cup! Their last PL match was a 5-0 thrashing of Southampton away from home. Man City scored eight past Salford and defeated Leicester 2-0 and West Ham 4-1 before that, however, they still aren’t looking anything like the all conquering side of early in the season. I think there can be real optimism of Brentford bouncing back to form at home and getting at least a draw.

Chelsea v Bournemouth – Chelsea have picked up only two points and scored two goals in their last four PL matches, up against Everton, Palace, Ipswich and Fulham. In contrast, Bournemouth are unbeaten in their last nine matches, including eight in the Premier League. Maybe Chelsea will bounce back to form BUT the form of the two teams tells you that Bournemouth should be able to get at least a draw, whilst an away win shouldn’t surprise anybody before they travel to St James’ Park on Saturday.

West Ham v Fulham – No instant new manager bounce as the Hammers took the lead but lost at Villa in the cup. In the Premier League they have lost their last two and conceded nine goals in total to Liverpool and Man City. Fulham are unbeaten in their last nine matches in all competitions, although six of their last eight PL games have been draws. You couldn’t seriously predict a Graham Potter West Ham win here but maybe they might hold out for a draw.

Forest v Liverpool – What a match in prospect, a win for Forest would take them into second and only three points behind the scousers. Forest have only lost five matches all season and two of those were against Newcastle. Forest have won their last six PL matches and have kept clean sheets in their last five games (all competitions). Not exactly a crisis for Liverpool but the outrageous luck they have carried this season has maybe ran out. Losing to Spurs in the League Cup and failing to win three of their last six PL matches. All results are possible in this match but on current form you have to fancy Forest to at least not lose. If defeating Wolves tomorrow, Newcastle could potentially be only two points behind Forest, or maybe eight points adrift of Liverpool (who have a game in hand), alternatively three and nine points respectively if these two draw tonight.

Wednesday 15 January

Everton v Villa – The scouse mackems have won one of their last eleven PL matches and failed to score in eight of their last ten PL games, as Sean Dyche tried to bore the opposition to death in their survival bid. Villa have won only four of their last twelve PL matches. Moyes isn’t renowned for exciting football but it can’t be quite as woeful as under Dyche, maybe Everton can score a goal and sneak a draw.

Leicester v Palace – Newcastle ended the mini new manager bounce for Ruud van Nistelrooy with a four goal hammering, it is now five PL matches lost in a row and the Foxes conceding 14 and scoring only two. Palace have won only three of their last eleven in the league. The kind of match where you think Leicester have to win if they are to stand any chance of staying up and they could move out of the drop zone with a win, if other results also go their way.

Newcastle United v Wolves – Here’s hoping for nine in a row.

Arsenal v Spurs – Maybe the biggest North London derby in a long time, in terms of one where both teams are so desperate for a positive result against a negative backdrop. Arsenal have lost to Newcastle United and Man U in their last two (cup) matches, whilst winning only three of their last six PL games. Whilst Spurs managed a 1-0 win over Liverpool in the League Cup but have lost five of their last seven PL matches, the only exceptions a home draw with Wolves and a win over rock bottom Southampton. A match that neither manager can afford to lose?

Thursday 16 January

Ipswich v Brighton – Brighton have no wins in their last eight PL matches, drawing six of them. Amongst the draws they couldn’t beat Southampton, Leicester, or West Ham. Ipswich defeated Chelsea 2-0 in their last home PL game and then a great 2-2 at Fulham in their most recent league match. A draw looks most likely but Ipswich will be wondering just how big a three points this would be to keep survival momentum going.

Man U v Southampton – Southampton could be setting Premier League records this season and not in a good way. One win against Everton, three draws, sixteen defeats, a woeful Premier League season so far. Without looking particularly good, Man U have somehow managed to win on penalties at Arsenal in the FA Cup despite going down to ten men, which followed a bizarre 2-2 at Anfield when Liverpool were really poor. The fact remains though in the previous six PL matches, apart from a very late fluky win at Man City, Man U have lost the other five and failed to score in four of those five defeats. Southampton have only scored one goal in their last half dozen Premier League matches but if they could manage to get the first goal at Old Trafford, it could be interesting.
