QPR CEO Christian Nourry has discussed Jimmy Dunne's situation amid interest from Sheffield United in the January window.
QPR CEO Christian Nourry has confirmed there was transfer interest in Jimmy Dunne, but he has no doubts the defender is committed to the club after he failed to secure a move elsewhere.
The Irishman has established himself as a key player for Marti Cifuentes since the Spaniard’s arrival, which includes impressing in a previously unnatural right-back position.
However, with his contract expiring in the summer, there are doubts about his long-term future, and FLW revealed that Sheffield United were trying to secure the 27-year-old ahead of Monday’s 11pm deadline.
Ultimately, a deal wasn’t agreed, with the Blades going on to sign Rob Holding from Crystal Palace.
That was a relief to QPR, although it does mean the defender is set to leave on a free in the summer as things stand.
Yet, speaking to the club’s media, Nourry insisted that he had no worries about whether Dunne is focused on the R’s, as he discussed how the situation played out.
“Jimmy was the subject of interest from another Championship club during the January transfer window. This Championship club did not meet our valuation for Jimmy, and therefore he remains with us.
“Let me be clear: Jimmy Dunne loves QPR. Whilst the opportunity of moving to a team that was recently in the Premier League is an appetising prospect for any ambitious footballer, which is a characteristic that I want all of our players to have because it makes them better footballers, Jimmy showed a great understanding of our position.
“He is concentrating now on putting all his efforts into every training session and every opportunity to play for the club that means so much to him.”
Even entering the final months of his deal at Loftus Road, Dunne will still have a valuation, and the club are right to reject offers if they fall below that.
There’s still a lot of football to be played this season, and whilst it may seem unlikely, the reality is that the Londoners are only six points away from the play-off places.
So, they are right to keep Dunne, and most would agree with Nourry in the sense that the 27-year-old will continue to give his all when he pulls on the hoops shirt.
Of course, beyond his summer, his future is up in the air, but it won’t be out of the question that Dunne doesn’t extend his stay, as he will be enjoying his time under Cifuentes, as he gets regular football and is at a good club.
