The Royals competed all season to finish in the top six of the League One table but missed out on it on the final day after losing 4-2 to Barnsley.

They finished seventh in the table, but are turning the page on a troubled era due to a takeover and are now looking towards a renewed promotion push next term.

Noel Hunt’s side have a fantastic core of young, talented players and they are looking to continue on that path.

Reading are now concentrating on adding a new central midfielder and they have identified a player who left Bristol City last year for the purpose.

National League side Weston-super-Mare’s 21-year-old Kadji is the player they like and he is being chased by fellow League One side Rotherham United and freshly-relegated to League Two, Shrewsbury Town.

Kadji is a youth product of Championship playoff side Bristol City, where he made four senior appearances before being released by the Robins at the end of last term.

After several loans away from Ashton Gate, the midfielder linked up with Weston-super-Mare of the National League South on a permanent basis.

He contributed to nine goals directly in 42 matches and the 21-year-old is now on Reading’s radar.

Kadji earned praise from former Bristol City boss Nigel Pearson when he was handed his Robins debut in the summer of 2022.

He featured for Bristol City in an EFL Cup win over Wycombe Wanderers.
