Liverpool’s Striker Dilemma: Is Marcus Thuram the Answer?

Liverpool’s search for a clinical centre-forward appears to be intensifying, with Inter Milan’s Marcus Thuram now firmly in their sights. The Frenchman, who has impressed in Serie A this season, has caught the attention of the Reds’ scouting team, according to TBR Football. However, Liverpool are not alone in their admiration, as Premier League rivals Arsenal and Chelsea are also monitoring the 27-year-old forward.

With Darwin Núñez continuing to divide opinion at Anfield, speculation over his future is growing. If the Uruguayan departs, Liverpool will need a more composed and reliable striker—qualities that Thuram seems to possess. Yet, with Inter keen to renew his contract and a hefty £71 million release clause, securing his signature will be anything but straightforward.

Thuram’s Credentials and Liverpool’s Interest

Thuram has emerged as a vital player for Inter Milan this season, netting 15 goals and proving his adaptability in multiple attacking roles. His ability to play as both a central striker and a wide forward could be attractive to Liverpool, offering flexibility in Arne Slot’s attacking setup.

TBR Football’s Graeme Bailey has provided confirmation, revealing that Liverpool scouts have watched him in recent weeks.

The Reds, however, are facing stiff competition. Arsenal and Chelsea have also been tracking Thuram, both clubs seeking reinforcements up front. With no clear frontrunner in the race, Liverpool must decide how aggressively they wish to pursue the deal—especially as Inter are pushing to extend Thuram’s contract beyond 2028.

Is Thuram Worth £71 Million?

Liverpool believe £71 million represents reasonable value for a forward of Thuram’s calibre. The striker market remains inflated, and securing a proven goal-scorer is never cheap. For comparison, Newcastle’s Alexander Isak—widely regarded as a dream signing for both Liverpool and Arsenal—would cost significantly more.

However, Thuram will turn 28 before the start of the next Premier League season. If Liverpool commit to a long-term deal, they must be confident he can maintain his current level for several years.

Our View – Anfield Index

Liverpool fans will undoubtedly have mixed feelings about a potential move for Marcus Thuram. While his 15-goal season at Inter suggests he is a more clinical option than Núñez, there are still reservations. He isn’t a traditional No. 9 and has spent much of his career operating in wide areas—something Liverpool already have covered with the likes of Luis Díaz and Diogo Jota.

The price tag is another issue. £71 million is not outrageous in today’s market, but it does represent a significant investment in a player approaching 28. If Liverpool are going to break the bank, some fans might prefer a younger, more natural finisher.

There’s also the question of whether Arne Slot sees Núñez as a key player. If the Liverpool manager believes he can refine the Uruguayan’s raw talent, Liverpool may prioritise midfield or defensive reinforcements instead of splashing out on another forward.
