Borussia Dortmund’s signing of England U20 international Carney Chukwuemeka was made official late Monday evening. The Chelsea midfielder joins the Bundesliga outfit on loan from Stamford Bridge for the duration of the season. At present, there are conflicting reports on the details surrounding the deal from two very reliable footballing media sources.

The Athletic’s Simon Johnson reports that Dortmund have agreed to take the 21-year-old’s salary in full and agreed to a loan fee of around €2m. Additionally, Johnson claims that Chukwuemeka’s permanent capture is tied to the €50m release clause in his contract. Johnson cites his own sources close to the Chelsea front office.

Kicker offers different details. Germany’s preeminent footballing publication reports a loan fee of around €1m and a purchase clause of around €35m. In any event, it looks to be the case that a permanent move to the Bundesliga – as was the case with Dortmund’s EPL loanees Ian Maatsen and Jadon Sancho last year – isn’t economically feasible.

Chukwuemeka can nevertheless likely count on earning some playing time under new BVB trainer Niko Kovac, who possesses an acute need in midfield. The Swiss born prospect logged no EPL minutes this season, though he did make an appearance as a sub in Chelsea’s famous trip to Heidenheim last November for a Conference League fixture.

Carney is an extremely talented box-to-box player who has already caused a sensation in the Premier League at a young age,” BVB sports director Sebastian Kehl noted in a club statement. “His dynamism, his drive towards the goal and his assertiveness, coupled with great footballing skill, make him an exciting player who has proven himself by breezing through all of England’s junior national teams since the U17s.”

It’s very exciting for me and I’m really honored to be part of this great club,” the player himself added. “I can’t wait to play in front of the fans at Signal Iduna Park and help us all to succeed.
