A new report has claimed that Manchester City have allocated a substantial sum of money for potential transfer business during the January market.

Etihad Stadium officials are often known to stay away from doing transfer business during the winter market unless necessary, or in the event of a unique opportunity emerging for the club to take advantage of.

The January window is more commonly seen by Manchester City as a chance to recruit young names from other corners of the globe, particularly from within the South American market, as seen through winter deals done for Julian Alvarez, Gabriel Jesus, and Claudio Echeverri.

However, the injury sustained by Rodri and the expected absence for the remainder of the season has left Pep Guardiola and his Etihad colleagues with a decision to be made over whether to recruit in the defensive midfield position.

Given the finances taken in by the club over the course of the most recent summer transfer window, it would perhaps come as no surprise to now learn that Manchester City have allocated significant funding to a potential recruitment plan in the coming months.

That is according to the information of Football Insider’s Pete O’Rourke, who reports that officials at Manchester City have now set aside a sum of £80 million for potential signings in the upcoming January transfer window.

Whilst the hunt for a replacement profile for the long-term injured Rodri has been mooted in various quarters, the report claims that Pep Guardiola and City would ideally like to find a solution within their existing squad.

However, if the right player is available in the mid-season transfer window, then it is claimed that Manchester City do have the money to spend to strengthen the squad, especially in light of big-money sales over the summer.

Options may be somewhat limited for Manchester City to look into however, with clubs notoriously known to be reluctant to negotiate for their primary talents at such a crucial phase of any season.

Etihad Stadium officials have however been linked to a number of names from within the ever-impressive Italian game, with the likes of Torino’s Samuele Ricci and Atalanta’s Éderson among those that could be interested in the challenge of moving to Manchester City.

One problem that may face Manchester City in negotiations is the future of Pep Guardiola, and the possibility of players and representatives seeking clarity around the Catalan’s intentions during conversations over a move to the Etihad Stadium in January.
