Young forward Igor Tyjon has been tipped to become Blackburn Rovers' latest breakthrough academy star after his rapid rise over the last year.

Tyjon has been with Rovers for just over a year now, since he joined their youth set-up from Rochdale AFC in July 2023, despite being linked with moves to Premier League sides Newcastle United and Brighton.

The 16-year-old featured in some first-team matchday squads in the Championship throughout last season while consistently bagging goals in the youth team, and he committed his future to the club this summer by signing a two-year scholarship contract, amid interest from a host of top sides, including Manchester United.

Tyjon has seen his stock rise even further so far this season, and could soon be in line for a more consistent place in John Eustace's senior squad as he progresses up the ranks.

Rovers fan pundit backs Igor Tyjon to break into first-team

Given the interest surrounding his signature, and anticipation for what he may become in the future, it should come as no surprise that Tyjon has been handed his senior Rovers debut by Eustace this season.

He appeared as a late substitute in Blackburn's 3-0 win over Bristol City on September 14, and in doing so became the third-youngest player in the club's history.

It is clear that he is highly-rated by the club and could be a key asset in the coming years, so FLW's Blackburn fan pundit, Toby Wilding, identified Tyjon when we asked him for a youngster that he tips to be the next breakthrough star at Ewood Park.

He said: “Igor Tyjon, who became the club’s third-youngest ever player when he came off the bench against Bristol City last month.

“He’s already scoring goals consistently at under-21 level while still only being 16-years-old, and signed a new contract with the club in the summer despite reported interest from Manchester United.

“I think when you look at that progress that he is making and potential he has, it wouldn’t be a huge surprise to see him more involved with the first team and making an impact in the not too distant future.

“You can understand, with all that in mind, why Blackburn fans are getting rightly excited about him.”

Tyjon has set high expectations at Blackburn

He has mostly still been playing in the youth side in recent months, and Rovers' under-21 head-coach Mike Sheron sung his praises after he netted against Leicester City for his third Premier League 2 goal of the campaign so far.

“I love his bravery and his positivity," Sheron told the Lancashire Telegraph.

“He’ll turn, he’ll try to go forward, he’s positive, he looks after it, he’s always reliable in possession and he’s always a threat.

"“I think that’s his third goal in three games and he’s scored four goals this season now, and he’s not played a hell of a lot of football.

“So it’s great that he’s playing a bit more consistently, it’s great that he’s scoring goals and I think that he’s going to be a real threat this season and hopefully he gets an opportunity with the first team somewhere down the line.”

Keeping Tyjon this summer was a real statement of intent for Blackburn, and his progress is certainly something to keep an eye on in the next few months and years.
