Ruben Amorim has diagnosed “the biggest problem” at Manchester United after the Reds sank to their 17th defeat in the Premier League this season.

Following their latest reverse against a struggling West Ham side, Amorim declared: “For me the biggest concern is the feeling that it’s okay. We cannot change our position so much so it’s okay.

“That is the biggest problem in our club in this moment. Because we are losing the feeling that we are a massive club and losing at home is the end of the world.

“That is the biggest concern in our club.”

The Reds’ afternoon was made even worse by the loss of a key defender. Leny Yoro went down injured and was forced off shortly after half-time. However Amorim seemed optimistic on the Frenchman’s fitness: “We have to assess Leny in a better way tomorrow. He felt something but I think it could be a small thing.”

The disappointing result sees the hosts slip down to 16th place in the Premier League table. Asked how that makes him feel, Amorim answered: “Like a manager of Manchester United is supposed to feel in that position – embarrassed.

“It is hard to accept and I think everybody has to think seriously about a lot of things here.”

United are headed for their worst finish in the history of the Premier League and they could still fall as low as 17th. Amorim insisted: “Everybody is thinking about the final but the final is not the issue at this moment in this club.

“We have bigger things to think about. We have to change a lot of things in the end of the season.

“We need to change a lot of things during the summer.”

The Portuguese coach continued: “I don’t want to talk about players, I am talking about myself and the culture in the club and the culture in the team.

“We need to be really strong in the summer and be brave because we will not have a next season like this. If the feeling is still here, we should give the space to a different person.”

The Reds face fellow Premier League strugglers Tottenham Hotspur in the Europa League final. A victory ensures qualification for next season’s Champions League.

However, Amorim is not thrilled with the prospect of competing with Europe’s elite next season.

United’s boss claimed: “To be honest I am not concerned about the final, it is by far the smallest problem in our club. We need to change something that is deeper than this.

“I don’t know what is best, playing Champions League or not.”
