Sapir Berman became the first transgender referee of a European match when officiating in the UEFA Women’s U-17 qualifiers.
Berman refereed the Second Qualifying Round group game between Northern Ireland and Montenegro in Belfast this week, in what UEFA say was a first in Europe, the Israeli official potentially even making history worldwide.
A career of officiating standing at 14 years has brought recognition as one of Israel’s best referees, with appointments to the country’s Premier League matches.
After recently receiving her international badge, Berman said: “A dream come true is only the beginning. After 14 years on the field, I have become an international referee. It is an enormous honour and an indescribable excitement, but more than anything, it is an opportunity to continue doing what I love in the world I grew up in and that shaped me. What an incredible way to start a new chapter.”
Seven years ago, Lucy Clark became the first transgender woman to referee a match, in the FA Women’s National League.
