In a devastating bit of update, SPORT’s Toni Juanmarti reports that Barcelona midfielder Marc Casado could be out for over two months after suffering an injury last night against Atletico Madrid.

The 21-year-old suffered a blow to his knee during the game against the Rojiblancos, following a play involving himself and Antoine Griezmann.

While an official update is yet to arrive, sources suggest that medical tests have confirmed that the player has suffered a tear in the external ligament, which is expected to keep him sidelined for an extended period.

Casado’s absence could exceed two months as he undergoes recovery and rehabilitation, which would essentially mean that his season might be over.

It also means that the youngster will not be flying off to play for Spain in the ongoing international break, much like Inigo Martinez, who has also had to withdraw from the La Roja squad due to an injury he sustained against Atletico as well.

However, the veteran defender’s injury prognosis is not as bad as Casado’s with the centre-back expected to return to action within two to three weeks.

Casado has been one of Barcelona’s breakout stars this season, establishing himself as a key part of Hansi Flick’s setup.

Even though his minutes had been somewhat limited in recent weeks with Frenkie de Jong’s resurgence, the Spaniard’s absence can hurt the Blaugrana in the business end of the season.
