The public dispute between manager Danny Rohl and owner Dejphon Chansiri has been damaging to Sheffield Wednesday's transfer plans.

It has been a frustrating January transfer window for Sheffield Wednesday supporters, but the club will be hoping to change that before Monday's transfer deadline.

After narrowly avoiding relegation last season, Wednesday have made significant progress under manager Danny Rohl this campaign, and they have emerged as surprise promotion contenders in recent months.

The Owls returned to winning ways with an impressive 2-0 victory over in-form Queens Park Rangers at Loftus Road on Saturday, and they currently sit 10th in the Championship table, just three points from the play-off places, ahead of the game against struggling Luton Town at Hillsborough this weekend.

If Wednesday are to achieve a top six finish this season, strengthening the squad in January was always going to be important, but with just days left until the closure of the window, there are still no new arrivals at the club, and the public dispute between Rohl and owner Dejphon Chansiri has been incredibly costly.

The first indications of problems behind the scenes at Hillsborough came last month when Rohl hinted at a breakdown in communication with Chansiri, and that was confirmed by the Wednesday owner at an explosive fan forum earlier this month.

As well as revealing that he had not spoken to Rohl since December, Chansiri said that no discussions had taken place with Rohl about potential incomings, and he refused to initiate the conversation, stating that if the German wanted to make signings, "he needs to come to me and tell me".

Thankfully for Owls supporters, Rohl and Chansiri have now buried the hatchet, and Rohl stressed after the win at QPR on Saturday that the club are now "working" on possible additions, but in truth, neither party has come out of this situation particularly well.

It has been claimed that the issues between the pair started when Rohl was denied a move to Southampton following the sacking of Russell Martin in December, but their disagreement should never have been allowed to play out in the public domain, and they should both have made more effort to resolve their differences much earlier.

There is no doubt that the standoff between Rohl and Chansiri has had a detrimental impact on Wednesday's transfer plans, and that was in evidence once again this week as the club missed out on one of their main targets.

The Star revealed on Tuesday that Wednesday had made a bid to sign Ipswich Town defender Harry Clarke on loan, but their hopes of landing him came to an abrupt end less than 24 hours later.

To add insult to injury for Owls supporters, Clarke instead made a move to their bitter Steel City rivals Sheffield United, and the 23-year-old described his decision to join Chris Wilder's side as a "no-brainer".

Of course, it is not surprising that Clarke felt that he was more likely to achieve promotion with the Blades, but Wednesday have a strong chance to secure a play-off place themselves, and they should still be an attractive proposition for potential signings.

However, the fall-out between Rohl and Chansiri has cost the Owls vital weeks in the transfer market, and it means they have been left scrabbling around for signings in the final days of the window, while the off-field chaos at the club could deter players from wanting to make the move to Hillsborough.

Having won promotion to the Premier League with Ipswich last season, Clarke would have been an excellent addition for Wednesday, and he would have slotted in perfectly in the right centre-back role, helping to add solidity to a defence that has conceded an alarming 45 league goals this campaign.

But with just five days to go until the window slams shut, the Owls are now back to the drawing board in their search for defensive reinforcements, and it is difficult not to feel that, had Rohl and Chansiri communicated properly in the build up to January, this situation could have been avoided.
