Virgil van Dijk cleverly turned the tables on reporters after Liverpool’s controversial late defeat to Tottenham in their Carabao Cup semi-final, first leg.
Lucas Bergvall struck home the winner four minutes from time but his decisive contribution will be shrouded in controversy because Liverpool felt he should not have been on the pitch.
Referee Stuart Attwell played advantage after a wild challenge on Kostas Tsimikas that could have brought a second yellow card.
No action was taken meaning Tottenham will take their slender advantage to Anfield for the second leg scheduled for early next month.
Van Dijk, clearly irked by the late defeat, chose to deflect lines of questioning on the VAR controversy back to reporters as Liverpool lost for only the second time this season.
When asked what we said to the referee in the immediate aftermath of Bergvall’s late winner, Van Dijk responded: “What do you think [I said]?
“Do you think he [the referee] made a mistake?”
After a reporter seemed to agree, the defender added: “So you think the referee made a mistake?”
Liverpool were far from their best against Spurs but Van Dijk is confident the Reds can overturn the deficit in the second leg.
“We tried to win the game,” he continued.
“We kept pushing up until the last second. We are in a semi final. We know how much they’d like to win it but I know for a fact we’d love to win it again.
“We cannot listen to noise from the outside because no one at the start of the season thought we would be in this position.
“We know we are going to be 1-0 down when the game is played at Anfield, so we have to fight and we have to do it all together with our fans.
“Hopefully everybody will be fit. Let’s see if we can do it. It will be very tough because they are a good team and, in my opinion, they have a very good manager. We are going to go for it.”
