When Florian Wirtz was left out of Bayer Leverkusen’s starting XI vs Borussia Dortmund on Friday evening, many eyebrows were raised.
One of the world’s most talented players, it was unthinkable that it would have been a tactical change from head coach Xabi Alonso.
What’s more, the club’s official social media channels originally had Wirtz as starting.
As reported by Kicker, Alonso explained that: “Something unexpected happened this morning, but he has no problems. It’s something internal. He’s in for the second half, no problem.”
This has led to speculation that it was disciplinary reasons as to why the German international was relegated to the subs bench.
When Managing Director, Simon Rolfes, was asked if it was in fact a disciplinary reason, the B04 man did not deny it.
“It was a small issue this morning, so Xabi decided that, but nothing more dramatic than that. Florian can certainly play, but not from the start.”
It’s been confirmed that Wirtz was fit to start from the beginning and it’s assumed that the 21-year-old was late to a meeting or training on the morning of the game.
