Luciano Spalletti believes Federico Chiesa may have learned valuable lessons at Liverpool, but insists Italy need to improve their physicality to compete with the best teams in the world.

Italy CT Spalletti leaves a door open to Chiesa’s return to the national team but argues that the Azzurri must be more solid physically to compete at the highest levels.

Chiesa has not played for Italy since the 2024 Euros, as he’s been struggling with injuries at Liverpool.

Not being part of Thiago Motta’s plans, the former Juventus star practically missed the pre-season in Turin before completing a permanent move to Liverpool in August.

He’s been working separately from the Liverpool squad for a long time, needing to recover his best fitness.

Chiesa recently returned to action with the Reds and has one assist in four appearances this term.

“He goes beyond the obstacle, creates opportunities for the team, stares at you, and goes beyond, offering chances single-handedly,” Spalletti told Domenica Sportiva on Sunday via Sky Sport Italia.

“Indeed, he must get more consistent playing time.”

Spalletti was asked whether joining Liverpool last summer was a mistake.

“I don’t know, but perhaps now he knows some things that will help him develop further,” Spalletti replied.

“I think he can help any team in any league, but some steps forward in terms of physical impact are required.

“We struggled against France’s intensity and physicality, so this is where we need to make a step forward.”

Lastly, Spalletti praised Napoli and Antonio Conte who are fighting for the Serie A title this term.

“Napoli are on a good path to fight for the Scudetto until the end,” he argued.

“They are having an excellent season. You can see they have a clear identity. They are strong, with a strong coach and a solid environment.”
