On Friday evening, France U21s were in action against England over in Lorient in a friendly, ahead of the European Championships that will be taking place this summer. As many of you will know, three Spurs players were involved in this game.
For France, Wilson Odobert started the game, playing off of the left hand side in a 4231 formation. Meanwhile, Mathys Tel was amongst the substitutes. For England, Archie Gray was also named amongst the substitutes.
It would be a frantic start to the game – setting the tone for the rest of the 90 minutes – as England took the lead after just two minutes, before France equalised after only four minutes themselves, before taking the lead after seven minutes in a very quick turn of events.
Then, after 35 minutes, Les Blues made it 3-1, with Odobert picking up an assist for Hugo Ekitike, who will play against Spurs for Frankfurt in the Europa League quarter finals next month. Two minutes later, England pulled a goal back – the sides went into the break with France 3-2 up.
Ten minutes into the second half, it was that combination again for the hosts, as Odobert assisted Ekitike for a second time in the game. Just after the hour mark, Spurs linked Liam Delap scored for England to make it 4-3. Five minutes later, Tel was introduced to the action.
With just under a quarter of an hour remaining, France made it 5-3. Very soon after, Gray came on as a substitute as England made five subs in one go. However, with five minutes remaining, the young Lions were reduced to ten men, and they would lose a very entertaining game 5-3.
After starting so many games this season, in an intense system, and out of position, as a teenager, it is no bad thing that Gray only played for 12 minutes here – albeit his minutes had reduced in the last couple of weeks anyway, and he will want to have a level of sharpness. Still, it is overall a good thing that his batteries are being recharged for the run in.
Next up for France is an away game against Slovakia on Monday, the 24th of March, at 17:30 GMT, whilst England will face Portugal, also on Monday, at home, for a 19:45 GMT kick off.
