Over the last few months, we have seen Tottenham Hotspur linked to LOSC Lille midfielder Angel Gomes a number of times – reaching all the way back to September. During and since the summer, they have also been linked with his team mate Jonathan David. Both players are out of contract in the summer, and are set to wind down their contracts in the summer, if they are not sold this month.

There has been a somewhat interesting development in terms of Gomes’ future. In Lille’s 1-1 draw at home to Nantes on Saturday evening, the England international remained an unused sub for the entire game, despite being one of the club’s more important players over the last few years.

Players can be rotated sometimes, but to not come on at all felt particularly noticeable. Meanwhile, the other Spurs linked player, the aforementioned David, played for the whole 90 minutes. Could this mean that they see Gomes as already out of the door, and David less so? Perhaps some straw clutching, but it did jump out as a bit strange.

With his contract soon expiring, you would imagine that the 24-year old would not cost a big fee. As he can now speak to clubs in England (or anywhere outside of France), ahead of a move in the summer - there is a big chance for Spurs to try and agree personal terms with the midfielder – which could, in turn, help fast forward a move to this window.

There is very little doubt that Gomes would add incredible quality to the midfield. He would add a dynamic option, who could help the team both in and out of possession – whilst also helping regarding the homegrown quota. However, with the current situation in defence, and the form of James Maddison this season, you would feel that other positions are of greater need and priority, so there is that to take into consideration too.

Either way, whether it be for now, or in the summer, Spurs should definitely try and sort terms with the midfielder. For a cut price or for free, he would add serious quality for an absolute bargain price. He is also at a stage of his career where he is experienced, and with lots of knowhow in the game, but also with developing left in him, and his best years absolutely ahead.
