St. Pauli entered Friday’s Bundesliga fixture with a horrible home record and serious trouble scoring goals. The famous fans of Hamburg’s Kiezkicker knew full well what their team was up against. It was such that some of the most committed supporters in German football performed a special action for the squad prior to the match, and it absolutely worked.

St. Pauli became the first top flight German side to win a home match in the entire month of March 2025 on Friday. Until St. Pauli bested Hoffenheim 1-0, all 18 hosting league sides either lost or drew their league games. Alexander Blessin’s Piraten themselves snapped a three-match home winless run and scored their first home goal since February.

The action from the St. Pauli ultras? Nothing particularly special from a German footballing standpoint. Pyrotechnic shows are a regular fixture for just about every historic tradition club. In this case, however, the ultras didn’t wait until the match to light their flares. Supporters greeted the team bus with a firework show as it pulled into the Millerntor.

“It was an amazing gesture,” Blessin remarked last night at the post match press conference. “I’ve never seen anything like that. It imbued us with a tremendous sense of energy.”

Left wing-back Philipp Treu, who courageously set up the game-winning goal, also noted that the display helped him get psyched for the game. Treu keenly remained on the hunt when Hoffenheim keeper Oliver Baumann attempted to pass out of the back to future Bayern midfielder Tom Bischof. Treu pounced on the ball, sharply lobbed over Baumann, and set up teammate Noah Weißhaupt’s 1-0.

Treu spoke in the mixed zone.

“It was 19:15 [as the bus rolled in ahead of the 20:30 kickoff],” Treu said. “And we all wanted to run out onto the pitch right then and there.
