Manchester City went one up midway through the first half, Vivianne Miedema playing in Mary Fowler on the right of the box, to rifle a shot inside the far post.

When Gunners’ goalkeeper Daphne van Domselaar parried a Jill Roord strike late in the half and Kerolin Nicoli turned in the loose ball, the flag was raised for offside.

After the restart City had the woodwork twice in a minute, Kerolin from a cross-shot and then Aoba Fujino denied by the crossbar.

Arsenal upped the pressure and were awarded a penalty for Rebecca Knaak’s tackle on Stina Blackstenius, Mariona Caldentey converting to level the scores before the hour mark.

Within a couple of minutes Fowler won another spot-kick at the other end but her penalty was parried clear by Van Domselaar.

Jill Roord headed wide in the 90th minute from Fujino’s cross but in the final minute of added time, Fowler found the bottom corner from 20 yards.
