Chelsea opted against signing a forward or a left winger in January as they believed there weren’t any good value options available according to reports.

The January window closed last week and the Blues made just the one signing with midfielder Mathis Amougou arriving from St Etienne for £12.5m.

Six players left the club, although Cesare Casadei’s move to Torino was the only permanent sale, but Chelsea were able to send a number of players out on loan.

Why Chelsea opted against singing a forward in January

It wasn’t a secret that Chelsea were looking to add an attacker in the winter window and the club were linked with a host of names.

Both left winger and striker were looked at, given the lack of competition for Nicolas Jackson, whilst Mykhailo Mudryk is currently suspended for a failed doping test and faces a lengthy spell on the sidelines.

Chelsea explored a move for Mathys Tel, whilst a move for Alejandro Garnacho was considered, with the Blues also said to be in pole position to sign Liam Delap.

Ultimately no attacker arrived and both Marc Guiu and Nicolas Jackson picked up injuries on deadline day against West Ham, with the Spaniard set to be out for a number of weeks.

Supporters were frustrated with the lack of transfer activity given the current issues in the squad, but The Times have reported why the Blues didn’t sign an attacker in January.

The report states Chelsea gave a lot of consideration to signing a left winger and a forward but decided to wait for the summer, as they didn’t feel there were any good value options available, which would have improved the side.

This explanation is unlikely to go down well with fans and the lack of action in January could end up costing Chelsea Champions League football, which would be a huge blow.
