Portugal coach Roberto Martínez gave an interview to Portuguese TV channel RTP 3, where a variety of topics were discussed.
This is what the Seleção manager had to say about issues ranging from his use of Cristiano Ronaldo, the rumours surrounding his future and the support he is or is not getting from the new FPF president Pedro Proença, as well as his thoughts on emerging Portuguese stars such as Rodrigo Mora.
On whether Cristiano Ronaldo will be a starter or not
“As the coach I have to take the best decisions for the team. I think that I’ve shown that I always do this, in a very professional and honest way. We constantly have to make decisions.”
On Nations League ambitions
“We are going to try and win the Nations League. There aren’t many opportunities in international football to win trophies, and there is nothing better than winning.”
On lack of preparation time ahead of the tournament
“It’s the same for our opponents. That’s the way it is in international football. The important thing is we are here. The final four is where we have to be.”
On support from the new Portuguese Football Federation president Pedro Proença
“The new management and president are giving us all the support, like they did during the Euro. The president has been very clear. He said he backs us and trusts in us.”
On whether he feels his future is at risk (amid Mourinho rumours)
“I have to be honest. I completely switch off from the noise surrounding the job every day. I have a responsibility, which is to work every day to create the best environment for the Seleção.”
On the ability of up-and-coming stars Rodrigo Mora, João Simões and Geovany Quenda
“Mora has above-average potential. We are talking about an 18-year-old player who is deciding games. We need to praise the work of his club manager. Giving confidence to a player like that is because a lot of work is going on day-to-day. Quenda, Mora and João Simões are already proving to be important players.”
