The signing of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang was probably the low point of the initial wave of transfer madness that accompanied the arrival of the Clearklake-Boehly ownership at Chelsea.
After taking over we had high hopes – but that summer saw them spend crazy money on big name players coming to the end of their career, with Aubameyang a prime example. All of these new faces were added to a group with a very uncertain future, creating a toxic mix which condemned us to a season from hell.
It’s not Aubameyang’s fault he was bought, nor is it his fault he was past it by the time he got to Chelsea. He’s spoken about the crazy situation he found himself in in quotes picked up by the Athletic:
“[Chelsea] made a mess. It didn’t even look like a football dressing room, it was more like rugby. Hakim Ziyech, Denis Zakaria, Kalidou Koulibaly, Romelu Lukaku… It was good I wasn’t alone. We were laughing every day, so it was OK.”
He also tells the story of how he arrived to play with former manager Thomas Tuchel who had got the best out of him at Dortmund – only to find the new coach sacked after Aubameyang’s first game. What a disaster.
While fans suffered from terrible results and performances, Aubameyang and his fellow misfits laughed at the mad dressing room situation caused by irresponsible spending and poor planning. While we’ve had plenty of criticism of the sporting directors who have since taken control of things, at least they aren’t buying over the hill players in their 30s.
Todd Boehly described Aubameyang as a leader when he signed him. Chuckling with his friends on the bench about what a mess they had got themselves into probably wasn’t exactly what Todd had in mind…
