Manchester United prepare to bring their dismal league season to a conclusion tomorrow afternoon at home to Aston Villa.
The sides have played one another 199 times in history with this match being the 200th meeting. United have won 106 and lost 51 times. There have been 42 draws between the two English giants.
Here are three plotlines to look forward to.
United have suffered a lot of pain this season but they are historically very good against the Villans.
The BBC report that “Manchester United have beaten Aston Villa in 40 Premier League games. It’s the second most one-sided fixture in Premier League history, behind United’s 42 wins over Everton.”
What’s more, “Villa have only won twice in their past 39 competitive matches at Old Trafford, both by 1-0 in the league in 2009 and 2021.”
Last season United came out on top with a comeback 3-2 victory on Boxing Day 2023. They also won 4-2 in the league cup in 2022 and 1-0 in April 2023.
After losing the Europa League final on Wednesday night, Red Devil fans will be desperate for a first league win since March to close out the season.
In halcyon days gone by, United would be lifting the Premier League trophy or taking a title fight to the last day where a win was essential.
Unfortunately, Ruben Amorim’s side currently live in another dimension but will still want to win to sign off on a disappointing campaign.
The Red Devils “have won their final Premier League match of the season 22 times – second only to Arsenal’s 23 – and only lost on four of 32 such occasions.”
They beat Brighton and Hove Albion 2-0 last year with goals through Diogo Dalot and Rasmus Hojlund.
With the disappointment of Wednesday night still stinging, there have been further rumours that United’s captain may leave the club this summer.
Despite disappointing in the final mid-week, he has without doubt been the club’s best and most consistent player this season. His 19 goals and 19 assists are well beyond the statistics of any other United player this season and he has always performed versus Villa.
Fernandes has scored seven goals against Aston Villa since joining the club in 2020. His seven strikes are a career-high versus any one team and he will hope to extend this record tomorrow afternoon.
