Enzo Maresca has insisted he wouldn’t rest Cole Palmer if the Blues didn’t have an injury crisis which has limited his attacking options.
Having taken the choice not to strengthen in January the Blues paid the ultimate price, and have been struck by injuries in the attacking third.
Nicolas Jackson and Marc Guiu both got injured against West Ham on deadline day, whilst Noni Madueke picked up a hamstring injury in the 3-0 defeat to Brighton.
With the absence of Jackson and Madueke, Chelsea are without two of their top three scorers in the league, and even more pressure has been placed on Palmer.
The 22-year-old has once again been Chelsea’s signing light in attack, but Maresca didn’t sound to sure when asked about Palmer’s future if the Blues miss out on the Champions League.
Palmer has 14 goals and six assists, although he hasn’t scored in his last six games in all competitions, and was guilty of missing a huge opportunity in the 2-1 defeat to Aston Villa over the weekend.

The England international has looked more frustrated in recent weeks, but Maresca has insisted he’s not worried about his form.
Right now Chelsea don’t have an alternative to Palmer, and Maresca was asked if he would rest the Englishman if the Blues didn’t have an injury crisis.
“No, to be honest, because first of all he’s always a player that can do something different,” he said as quoted by The Evening Standard.
“For sure, probably in terms of numbers, goals and assists, it is a moment where he struggles, but at the end he had the chance [against Villa].

“He was there, then he missed, okay, but he was there. The problem is when you are not there.
“But it’s not just about Cole. We had more chances the other day with different players but because it’s Cole and everyone relies on him and everyone expects from him that he’s going to score goals. When he missed a chance, everyone is watching that but for me it’s okay.”
