Son left with nasty-looking gash to his forehead during celebrations in Bilbao
Heung-min Son was left with a Europa League battle scar after cutting his forehead on the trophy in the heat of Tottenham’s celebrations in Bilbao.
The Spurs captain suffered a nasty-looking gash above his right eye as Spurs celebrated beating Manchester United to end their 17-year-old trophy drought.
“Look at this!” said Son, holding his hair to show the damage in a video posted by Spurs on social media.
Son then explained how the trophy grazed his forehead during the celebrations.
“I lift [the trophy]; somebody pushed me, and I [hit my] head with the trophy!”
The red mark did not seem to bother Son too much and, still smiling, he then went over to Spurs fans to continue the celebrations on the pitch.
The caption on the post from Spurs read: “Worth it.”
Son said after the game that he can now be called a “legend” after he achieved his dream of lifting silverware at Spurs, who beat Manchester United 1-0 thanks to a goal from Brennan Johnson and a miraculous late goalline clearance from Micky van de Ven.
The South Korean has previously said he could be considered among the club’s greatest players due to his lack of silverware.
But Son told TNT Sports: “Let’s say I’m a legend. Why not?
“Only today! 17 years nobody has done it, so today let’s say with amazing players probably a legend of the club.
“This is what I’ve always dreamed for. Today is the day it happened. I am the happiest man in the world.”
