Tottenham Hotspur have decided against pursuing Chelsea defender Axel Disasi on transfer deadline day, reports claim, and have also failed in an attempt to prise Marc Guehi away from Crystal Palace.
Spurs have been blighted by injuries this season, particularly in defence. As it stands, Cristian Romero and Radu Dragusin are both sidelined without an indication of when either might return.
Micky van de Ven was rested against Brentford at the weekend, having only just made his comeback from a long-term hamstring absence in the Europa League a few days earlier.
Ex-Southampton star Kevin Danso has already joined on loan, having impressed during three and a half year at Lens, but Tottenham have continued to explore centre-back options.
There was a possibility of going after Chelsea's Disasi, proven in the Premier League but not part of Enzo Maresca's plans at Stamford Bridge. But Sky Sports report that Spurs have ended that interest for now, although they could be encouraged to re-engage after Fabrizio Romano revealed alternative suitors Aston Villa - and Disasi's preferred option - have stepped back from talks.
Fabrizio Romano had earlier revealed that a loan agreement between Chelsea and Tottenham was in place, with the proposed move hinging on approval from Disasi himself. It suggests that he wasn't keen on the move, with Spurs treading water in the bottom half of the Premier League table.
Then, it was reported by The Athletic that Crystal Palace have rejected a "major offer" for Guehi. Sky Sports put a valuation of a Spurs club record £70m on that bid for the England defender - broken down into £55m plus £15m in add-ons - and that came before Danso's signing.
Guehi was considered by former Chelsea earlier in the transfer window, before recalling Trevoh Chalobah from his Palace loan instead. The 24-year-old was also the subject of multiple rejected bids from Newcastle United last summer, with Spurs and other clubs tipped to resurrect interest in the next summer transfer window instead.
At that point, Guehi will only have one season left to run on his Crystal Palace contract.
