Nathan Jones’ side bested Wycombe Wanderers across two legs to earn a spot in the League One play-off final, where they will face Leyton Orient for a shot at Championship football next season.

It was Godden who stood up to the occasion and netted the vital strike, poking home a scrambling ball in the box to crown himself as the club’s play-off hero.

The 33-year-old has been in flying form this year, bagging more goals at home (10) than any other player across the EFL.

Campbell and Leaburn react to Godden’s inspiring message

Taking to Instagram after the game, the match-winner posted a picture of himself saluting his adoring Charlton fans, complimented by a battle cry ahead of their Wembley venture.

“The Valley is made for special nights and last night was one of them…… 1 more to go… WEMBLEYYY ♥️♥️♥️,” read the caption.

Clearly a popular figure in the Addicks’ dressing room following the decisive strike, fellow Charlton stars Campbell and Leaburn reacted to the message with complimentary replies.

Leaburn summarised his feelings with a simple “😍😍”, whereas Campbell labelled his teammate as “The Best!!!❤️❤️🔥”.

A date with destiny awaits Godden and Co. at Wembley.

Clearly, team unity is at an all-time high within Charlton’s squad, something which has served them well this season and could ultimately have era-defining consequences for Nathan Jones’ side.

The Addicks finished seven points off the automatic promotion places, but came into the play-offs in flying form, winning six times in their final eight games to create a real buzz around The Valley.

Now they have dispatched Wycombe, who battled with Wrexham endlessly throughout the campaign for second place, which will provide Charlton with further confidence to get the job done at Wembley.

The victory clearly means a lot to the squad, given their reaction on social media, coupled with Nathan Jones’ outburst of emotion on the touchline following the victory.

The former Southampton and Luton Town manager dropped to his knees as the referee whistled for full-time, with a mix of relief and disbelief seemingly getting the better of him in the moment.

Mentality can be the difference between eternal glory and a lifetime of regret in these career-defining football games, and Charlton may enter the final with a slight psychological edge over Leyton Orient.

The Addicks bested their opponents in both league games this season – so the squad know they have what it takes to get the job done at Wembley.

However, Orient did best Charlton 2-0 in the EFL trophy, which shows it certainly won’t be plain sailing for Jones’ side.

Either way, the League One play-off final is set to be a bumper clash with two sides well worthy of promotion to the Championship.
