The Blues defeated The Cityzens 2-1 at Derby County’s Pride Park this afternoon. Mayra Ramírez fired them into an early lead but they were pegged back by an Aoba Fujino equaliser. In a game of fine margins, Chelsea had luck on their side with Yui Hasegawa deflecting the ball into her own net 13 minutes from time to decide the tie.
When speaking in the post-match press conference, Chelsea boss Bompastor admitted that it wasn’t her side’s best performance but the result was what mattered.
“It feels great, I am really happy,” Bompastor said. “The most important thing is that we brought a trophy to the club. We are really ambitious and when we have the opportunity to win a first title, that’s really positive. I’m really happy for that reason but also, I’m really proud of my players today.
“The performance was not the greatest but again, we found a way to win the game. City are a really good team, so it was a tough game and we were expecting that. We created some opportunities, some chances and we could score two goals which was enough to win the game.”
Manchester City played under the guidance of interim head coach Nick Cushing for the first time. Bompastor wasn’t expecting much change to The Cityzens’ game plan before the match and she said that things turned out as expected.
She said “The squad and the players on the pitch were the same as with Gareth [Taylor]. In four days, I don’t think you can expect a lot of changes. Most of the big principles that you could see under Gareth were the ones that you could see today with Nick. Maybe in the coming days or weeks, he can implement more but for this game, it was maybe a bit short for him.”
With one trophy now in the cabinet, Chelsea have three more to fight for. Bompastor is not ruling out the quadruple but admits that it will be a tough challenge.
She said “We have a lot of quality but when you reflect on the game, the other teams also have a lot of quality. It was tough today but I think our mentality is the right one. We work really hard, we put our heart on the pitch which is the right thing to do but it’s fine margins and small details going into these games. Sometimes, it goes the way you want and sometimes not but hopefully, for the next games we will have things going how we want.”
Chelsea take on Manchester City again on Wednesday evening when they travel to The Joie Stadium for a UEFA Women’s Champions League quarter-final, first leg tie.
