Manchester United cruised past Athletic Club at Old Trafford on Thursday, bringing the aggregate scoreline in their UEFA Europa League semi-final to 7-1 – but Ruben Amorim insists that the Red Devils still “have so many weaknesses”.
Speaking in his post-match press conference after a 4-1 win at the Theatre of Dreams, the Portuguese manager explained: “It was so much tougher than if you look just to the result.”
“I think we deserve, if you look at the two games, to be in the final,” he clarified.
Mason Mount was the unexpected hero for the Red Devils, scoring the equaliser on the night before adding United’s fourth in style as he picked out an open goal from distance in stoppage time.
Amorim was visibly pleased when the goal went in, and he revealed to the media: “That is the best feeling as a coach.”
“Everybody in that dressing room sees Mason Mount doing everything he can to be available. He’s a really good player and you can see both goals are really good goals. I think not just Mason Mount, not just me, but also the teammates, they were all so happy for him.”
Manchester United will face Spurs in an all-English final at Bilbao’s San Mamés later this month, with plenty at stake for both clubs as they look to qualify for the UEFA Champions League. Spurs have prevailed in all three of the meetings between the sides this season, but Amorim isn’t overly worried.
“Every game has its history. We lost the last three games, we can win this one. If you look at the odds, we are closer to win than to lose. Both teams are going to play like all or nothing in this kind of game. It’s quite similar, the position of the coach is quite similar. I know that Ange [Postecoglou] has [been at Spurs] one more year. It is different, the context, but we are struggling, both of us.”
The 2024/25 UEFA Europa League final gets underway at 20:00 BST [21:00 CEST] on Wednesday 21 May at San Mamés.
