Manchester United winger Alejandro Garnacho has revealed that the manner in which they conceded against Brentford just before the break, motivated the team to fight back and ultimately clinch all three points.

United came from behind to beat Brentford 2-1 at Old Trafford.

Against the run of play, the Bees took the lead moments before half-time, courtesy of Ethan Pinnock who headed home from a corner.

Pinnock found the back of the net while United were reduced to 10 men. Matthijs de Ligt was ordered by the referee to leave the pitch and receive further attention for a bleeding head injury that he had suffered earlier.

In his post-match comments, Erik ten Hag insisted that it was “not right” that De Ligt was required to depart the pitch and it was because of his absence that United conceded.

The Red Devils were furious with the referee and other match officials. In fact, both Ten Hag and assistant coach Ruud van Nistelrooy were booked for protesting the incident.

However, United got themselves back on level terms almost immediately after the restart, with Garnacho converting a sublime cross from Marcus Rashford. Rasmus Hojlund would go on to complete the comeback just after the hour mark. The Denmark international produced a beautiful chipped finish that Mark Flekken had no chance of saving.

After the final whistle, Garnacho spoke to MUTV and said, “We are very happy, but I also think that we played a good performance in the first half.”

“We were 1-0 down but I think we played, in general, a very good game.”

“After the first half we were very angry because we played with 10 men for a little bit of the time, but with a good mentality we came back in the game.”

He added, “I missed two big chances in the first half but I came to the second one with the same mentality – try to score and win the game.”

“Finally I could do it. Also, Rasmus, I am happy for him.”

Up next for United is a Europa League meeting in Turkey against Jose Mourinho’s Fenerbahce side.
