Key stats
Ngoumou was born in Toulouse, France to a Cameroonian father and Gabonese mother, and has chosen to represent Cameroon at international level, making his debut for them against Eswatini during the March international break. He had previously played for France at youth level, alongside fellow Bundesliga stars Amine Adli and Hugo Ekitiké, before switching to represent Cameroon at senior level.
His journey to the Bundesliga and international stage began with his hometown club Toulouse, where he played alongside former Foal Manu Koné and Anthony Roualt, who recently departed VfB Stuttgart, for the club’s U19 side.
Ngoumou and Koné ended up making their professional debuts together when they both started in a 2-1 loss to Dijon in 2019. While Koné departed for Gladbach in advance of the 2021/22 season, Ngoumou stuck around a bit longer to win the Ligue 2 title with the club, seeing them return to the French top tier before joining Koné at Borussia-Park during the 2022/23 season. His first game of that season came against former Borussia Dortmund coach Lucien Favre’s Nice side in a 1-1 draw, before spending the rest of the season in the Bundesliga with his new side.
He went on to make 20 Bundesliga appearances under Daniel Farke, scoring once against Wolfsburg on Matchday 27. Having become accustomed to his surroundings, Ngoumou became an important player for Gerardo Seoane in the 2023/24 campaign, making 36 appearances in the Bundesliga and DFB Cup, registering six goals and four assists. Injuries have disrupted his progress this season, but he has started seven of the eight possible games since returning to the squad for Gladbach’s 3-0 win over Bochum on Matchday 19.
Plays a bit like: Kingsley Coman
Both Coman and Ngoumou are incredibly quick and love to stretch defences with their willingness to run in behind and their dribbling ability. They work incredibly hard off the ball too, making sure their teams regain possession as quickly as possible before setting off on another attack. Ngoumou’s speed - topping out at 22.7 mph (36.53 km/h) in 2024/25 to rank fifth across the division - is especially appreciated at Gladbach, who love to hit teams on the counter.
Did you know?
Ngoumou is the cousin of former Cameroon international Achille Emaná, who made 42 appearances for his country and represented them at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.
