With Carlo Ancelotti set to bid farewell after three more matches, the winds of change are already blowing at the Santiago Bernabeu.
Xabi Alonso, who is widely expected to take over the reins, is already exerting influence on the club’s summer transfer strategy, particularly when it comes to strengthening a backline that has suffered from injuries and inconsistency this season.
Top of the shopping list are two standout young defenders: Dean Huijsen of Bournemouth and Alvaro Carreras of Benfica. According to multiple reports, signing this duo could cost Real Madrid over €100 million, signalling a major investment in the club’s future.

Huijsen has emerged as a priority target for Xabi Alonso. The 20-year-old Dutch-born centre-back has impressed with his composure on the ball, strength in duels, and positional intelligence, attributes Alonso values as fundamental for his future defensive leader.
Despite interest from Chelsea and Liverpool, Huijsen’s camp has made it clear that his priority is to play in Spain, with Real Madrid at the top of his list.
However, Bournemouth are unwilling to negotiate and are holding firm to the €58 million release clause, which can be paid in three instalments within 18 months.

While Huijsen would bolster the centre, Carreras is the name Alonso has marked for the left flank. Currently playing for Benfica, Carreras brings flair, confidence, and attacking thrust from deep, qualities Alonso sees as essential for the full-backs in his tactical setup.
The Galician defender, formerly of Manchester United, is slightly more affordable with a €50 million release clause.
Though United have a buyback clause, it does not include a right of first refusal, meaning Carreras has the final say on his destination. At the moment, the player’s sights are believed to be set on Madrid.
Alonso is particularly drawn to Carreras’ personality and room for development. Unlike more seasoned but rigid options on the market, Carreras fits the dynamic, possession-based, high-press system Alonso plans to introduce.
